Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: what they mean for your website

What Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode are, what Google asks of website owners, and what helps your pages appear as a source in AI answers.

What changes for searchers

More questions are answered right on the results page. For simple facts, fewer people click through. For bigger decisions, such as choosing a supplier, people still open websites, and the links inside an AI answer get a lot of attention.

What Google asks of website owners

Google’s guidance is short: the usual SEO basics apply. To appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Google Search. There is no extra markup, no special file and no separate sign-up. You can read it in Google’s guide on AI features.

What helps in practice

  • Answer clearly. A heading phrased as a question, 2 or 3 sentences that answer it directly, then the details.
  • Be specific. Prices, timelines, places and names. Vague pages are hard to quote.
  • Stay fast on phones. Most searches happen on a phone.
  • Show who is behind it. Author, company details and the date of the last update.
  • Keep your Google Business Profile current for local questions.

Can you opt out?

Yes, but it costs visibility. The settings nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex limit what Google shows from your pages, also in AI features. For most companies, being quoted is the goal, so we leave them off.

How to see the effect

In Search Console, clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted in the normal Performance report under web search, mixed with classic results. More on this in measuring visitors from AI tools.

Questions and answers

Do I need a special file or code for AI Overviews?

No. Google says the normal SEO basics are enough: a page that is indexed and allowed to show a snippet.

Does AI Mode work in German in Switzerland?

Yes. Google rolled AI Mode out in Switzerland in October 2025, in German as well.
